At the head of the Estuary is the old town of Kingsbridge, which, at high tide, looks down from its hill on a happy picture of wide, glittering water all afrisk with little boats and trailing reflections. At low tide, the Estuary here is now largely mud-bound; but there was a time when Kingsbridge could boast a prosperous Mediterranean trade, employing a fleet of. a hundred and fifty vessels. In the town there is an interesting little market house, called the Shambles, with an arcade of granite pillars. At the mouth of the lagoon stands Salcombe, a small "resort" much favoured by yachtsmen. The Regatta, held in late summer, attracts a multitude of craft to this beautifully situated little town, which welcomes its visitors with a sub-tropical climate, pleasant green hills, blue waters, golden sands, and a luxuriance of wild flowers. In truly astonishing contrast to the gay and friendly scene at Salcombe are the huge dark cliffs that tower above the entrance to the harbour. These are some of the oldest rocks in the world, and they sweep in savage impressiveness from Bolt Head for five miles westward to terminate at Bolt Tail. Under Bolt Head, on a rock half circled by the sea, are the ruins of a little castle built by Henry VIII, as. a protection against the pirates who lurked within the shelter of the Estuary and dashed out to plunder passing ships. During the Civil War, Edmund Fortescue, having refortified the castle, and rechristened it Fort Charles, held it through a long and honourable siege against Fairfax: and surrendered at last only when assured of honourable terms. He and his men marched out of Fort Charles to the accompaniment of drums and flying colours, and every man was given three months in which either to make his peace with Parliament or, if he preferred, to leave the country.
