Description: Grace Line, Furness Prince Line & American Republics Line: What an elegant brochure this is! The covers are a glossy stock with gold printing. Inside are forty-two pages of big b&w photography of South American destinations (how uncrowded and peaceful those cities once looked) and the fleet. The brochure was issued in July 1939 as a joint collaboration between Grace, American Republic, Furness Prince, Pan American Airlines, and the Chilean State Railways to encourage tourists to sail down one side of South America, take a train or fly across, and then sail back up the other side. Grace Line's SANTA LUCIA, one of four sisters built in the early 1930s, is featured in four pages with a big portrait, a large swimming pool photo, a comfy cabin view and a pic of one of the most remarkable features of this ship, the dining room with its retractable roof open to the stars. The SANTA LUCIA and her three sisters had their restaurants high up on the Promenade Deck between the funnels to accommodate this unique feature. This brochure was a swan song for the LUCIA as she was torpedoed and sunk off Algiers in November 1942. Four pages are also given over to Grace Line's smaller trio of west coast South American liners, SANTA CLARA, SANTA BARBARA, and SANTA MARIA. Besides a big two-page portrait, there are large photos of the pool area, a plush cabin, and the lounge filled with handsome models with sipping cool drinks. Of this trio, only the SANTA MARIA survived the war and became Lauro Line's SURRIENTO. Next up are four pages for the American Republics trio, BRAZIL, URUGUAY, and ARGENTINA. Until the year before they had been Panama Pacific's VIRGINIA, CALIFORNIA, and PENNSYLVANIA. There is a big portrait, a cabin photo, a view of the pool, a large dining room scene, and two pics of the lounge. The interiors show the original Williamsburg-inspired decor from the 1920s. Post-war this was ripped out and replaced by Carmen Miranda tropical. The final four-page section is for the Furness Prince Line ships; EASTERN PRINCE, NORTHERN PRINCE, WESTERN PRINCE, and SOUTHERN PRINCE. Along with ARL these ships sailed down the east coast of South America. As with the other lines, there is a big two-page portrait of a ship and then two pages of interior views. Half of this Furness Prince fleet was lost during the war. One last notable feature of this unusual brochure - there are two pages dedicated to Pan American-Grace Airways. The photos of the DC-3 remind me of the planes my family traveled on while living in Brazil in the mid-1960s. There was always a mishap - the stewardess would pour hot coffee on my father, the toilets would back up, an engine would catch fire. Oh the good old days! Very good condition.
