Description: Ed Ruscha, by Richard D. Marshall. Published by Phaidon Press 2003, reprinted in paperback 2005. 271 pages, hundreds of illustrations, full-size dust jacket. The following was adapted from an online Amazon review: "This is the paperback edition of the first monograph on Ed Ruscha's work. It is a discerning and insightful look at his prolific and many-faceted career as a painter. The thematic and loosely chronological structure of the book brings to light the diversity of Ruscha's work, while at the same time underlining the continuity and recurrence of themes and ideas within his ever surprising and prolific career. Ruscha gained attention in the early 1960s with paintings, drawings, and photographic books that focused on his fascination with the unique culture, vernacular, and sensibility of his adopted home of Los Angeles. But Ruscha refused to be categorized as a Pop artist, and his work reaches beyond that classification. He has been considered a "West Coast" artist, and although Los Angeles is undeniably the source of inspiration for his work, the themes he addresses are far-reaching and universal." In superb condition, almost like new; in fact the book opens as if it was seldom, if ever, read. The interior of the book appears to be flawless; binding is square and solid; minor scuffs on front and back; tiny dots of wear at corners; very slight edge-wear. The dust jacket is also excellent: some light creasing along top edge; bottom edge much less so; light scuffs on front and back; very minor wear at corners and edges. A gorgeous book - gift quality.
