Description: EARLY DAYS IN EAST AFRICA By the Late SIR FREDERICK JACKSON With a Foreword by Lord Cranworth. EDWARD ARNOLD & CO. 1930 First edition. Throughout his career Jackson served in numerous administrative posts, including Lieutenant-Governor of Uganda (1911-18). These memoirs—published with the help of Jackson's wife the year after his death—are essential for understanding the rise of British colonial rule throughout East Africa. Beginning with his arrival at Lamu in 1884, Jackson discusses a wide variety of issues, the most important of which are the Imperial, British East Africa Company's activities, the Sudanese mutiny, and the Uganda Railway's construction. There also are chapters about Jackson's experiences as a big game hunter. A classic. (Ofcansky, British East Africa 1856-1963.) Jackson recounts his early days hunting around Lake Lamu in the 1880s. Besides hippo, waterbuck, hartebeest, eland, and oryx, he bagged buffalo near the Mau Escarpment, and buffalo, elephant, and lion near Mt Elgon. He also relates a failed attempt at the elusive bongo. The author met quite a few well-known hunters of the era, including Count Teleki, Sir John Willoughby, Buffalo Jones, William Rainsford, and others. Of interest are his comments regarding Teddy Roosevelt, whom Jackson liked but decried his over-expenditure of ammunition on game. There is also a chapter on professional hunters in general.
