Description: 1994 drama Mesmer starring Alan Rickman, Amanda Ooms, David Burke and directed by Roger Spottiswoode. The Story: The 18th-century Viennese medical establishment is threatened by the radical yet successful healing methods of physician Franz Anton Mesmer (Rickman). Blind pianist Maria Theresa Paradies (Ooms), daughter of a well-to-do businessman, becomes Mesmer's patient after he calms her seizures at a concert. The two are drawn into an intimate relationship, which is used as an excuse to banish Mesmer from Vienna. Undaunted, he moves on, becoming a court favorite in Paris. Comment: Alan Rickman gives a stunning portrayal as a healing guru not quite in step with established medical practices. Amanda Ooms is perfectly cast as Mesmer's beautiful but fragile patient. While the film is biographical, it only deals with a small part of Mesmer's life - roughly the period 1775 to 1785. No happy endings await anyone in this film, although Mesmer was later recognized for his accomplishments. Accused of quackery at the time, many of Mesmer's theories are accepted today. Mesmer's name is the root of the English verb "mesmerize". Per the label, the film has106 minute running time - the extended Director's Cut of the film - and is presented in full-screen 4:3 format; with English audio, no subtitles.
