Dunhill 'Whangee' Estate (1967/1968)

Description: Dunhill's bamboo-shanked briars, also known as "Whangees", typically sport pretty stout stuff, with big, prominent knuckles. By comparison, this particular Shell is slender one, though the bamboo is still thicker than what you'd commonly see on more modern Danish and Japanese pipes of similar shape. It must be noted, however, that with this trim bowl, and with most of the pipe's length being made up of the bamboo, the result is a real featherweight. Bamboo is said to have been used right after WWII by Dunhill as a way to save briar with the worldwide shortage going on, specially given this pipe was made with Algerian Briar. Supposedly the W60/Whangee first appeared near the 1951 catalog. The term “Whangee” comes from the Mandarin word for bamboo, huáng lí and was used to describe canes and umbrellas with bamboo handles throughout the early to mid-1900s before being attributed to pipes — Dunhill’s in particular. Bamboo came to into use in pipemaking during the briar shortage that accompanied and followed WWII. As a means of saving on briar, pipemakers would extend the shank with bamboo. Dunhill's "Whangee" has become one of their most scarce and collectible offerings. The scripts are special on Whangee pipes (logo Dunhill) due to little space to engrave informations.
