December 1984 my parents lived in Arlington Tx. I lived in Austin TX. I was 24 at the time. They visited me for Christmas and I suggested we see David Lynch's Dune. I read the novel and was a die-hard Eraserhead fan. So you can imagine my anticipation for this move. As we were watching, my parents began to get confused. I had to explain parts that I thought were obvious. After they did seem to enjoy the movie, especially my mom. She was a huge foreign film fan. She loved the advent of video stores in the early 80s. Two films she so astutely loved and championed were "La Cage aux Folles" and "Fandango" auteur director Kevin Reynold's first movie, and first of many collaborations with Kevin Costner. The Birdcage is the american remake of La Cage, and also is a triumph. Ok, peace out.
