Wilson was raised on the banks of a bayou in south Louisiana. He traces his ancestry back to the Acadians who were forced out of Nova Scotia by the British. Many of those French speaking Acadians settled in Louisiana and became known as Cajuns. They lived along the bayous of the state fishing, hunting, and trapping. Lyman attended the University of Louisiana in Lafayette and received a BA degree. The then went on to the University of Mississippi and received a MA degree in education.
