Description: Count John McCormack: The Complete Surviving Early Recordings (1904-06). Volume VII in the Pearl historical label’s series of John McCormack’s recordings (here on the Opal sub-label) contains McCormack’s first recordings, made mostly on black wax cylinders. That these 57 recordings still exist at all is something of a miracle. While the celebrated Irish tenor’s artistry is very much in the nascent stage, one can see flashes of the supreme singer he was to become. Many of the recordings are in tough but listenable quality. Yet there are others that are pretty brutal on the ears and some may find hard to endure, even for those used to historical recordings. Still, lovers of McCormack will want to persevere for these two discs offer a fascinating historical document of one of the greatest singers of the 20th century at the earliest stage of an illustrious career.
