Description: ARTWORK OF HISTORY OF FISHING IN THE PACIFIC NORTH WEST AND ALASKA In the painting it shows the Sophie Christenson with the American flag being hoisted on the last day of a five-month cod-fishing season. The four-masted schooner Sophie Christenson was built by the Hall Brothers Shipyard at Port Blakely on Bainbridge Island, Washington, in 1901 for Sudden and Christenson of San Francisco. Sudden and Christenson was in the shipping business and sent the Sophie Christenson from the US West Coast to South America, the South Pacific Islands, Australia and China. The majority of her cargo was lumber, which she loaded at any of the ports on the Pacific North West coast. The Sophie Christenson was sold in 1917 and continued to operate in the West Coast lumber trade. She was purchased in 1925 by Captain J. E. Shields, who operated her in the lumber trade until 1928 and then converted her to a cod-fishing schooner. A Bulkhead was installed below the main deck at the forward end of the cargo hold for the installation of a foc'sle for the enlarged crew. The forward deckhouse was enlarged to have a galley and mess space to feed the officers and crew. This was the customary conversion of a lumber schooner with a crew of 8 or 10 people to a cod-fishing schooner of up to 45.
