Description: ORIGINAL CIVIL WAR SEWING "HOUSEWIFE" KIT, Mid-1800's, Leather Roll-Up Style This leather "roll-up" style sewing kit was commercially manufactured and sold by sutlers or other merchants to the Civil War soldier or any civilian wishing to have a kit for traveling with to make necessary repairs to clothing or other items. The body is made of patent leather with brown polished cotton edge binding. The tan cotton lining has a brocade pattern to it. Blue velvet was used on the ends of the roll for a pin cushion. There are a couple of original sewing needles attached to the inside. The kit shows usual wear for an item being over 150 years old. See pics for further details as they are part of the description.
