Description: Chopstick Rest Jizo Statue Hashioki Hashi Oki Porcelain New Japan This piece measures 1.25 inches high and 2 inches long and it is made of ceramic depicting a Buddhist deity, Jizo whose name means "matrix of the earth." He was Bodhisattva (Bosatsu), one who achieved enlightenment but forsakes nirvana to help others to find paradise. Ksitigarbha in Sanskrit, Jizo came to Japan around the sixth or seventh century AD with the introduction of Buddhism to Japan. He is believed to save our souls for the 5.67 billion years after the demise of Sakyamuni until the future when the second Buddha Miroku finally appears in this world. He is the only Bodhisattva portrayed as a monk having a shaven head because of his refusal to become a Buddha until "all the Hells are empty" by transporting rescued souls from hell to paradise. He was worshipped especially by the Pure Land Buddhist sect as the protector of those in distress, of children, of mothers in childbirth, of farmers and travelers. His statue is often found along the roadside carved from a natural stone like this piece. This is also a ceramic chopstick rest piece called a Hashioki with the appearance of stone. Hashioki is a rest to lay your chopsticks on so as not to soil the tablecloth or keep them from getting soiled during the meal. A variety of designs and mediums are used and they in turn add a charm to an Asian style dinner setting to delight guests. Though this is a Chopstick rest, aside from its being a utilitarian piece, it is also a lovely figurine as well.
