Description: 1¢ Provisional Surcharges on ½¢ Martyrs of 1941-1943In May 1942, the Director General of Posts revised the printed matter rate. They ordered the district offices of Hunan-Kwangtung, Kiangsi, Fukien, and Kwangsi to surcharge their stock of ½¢ values with a new value of 1¢ in red. The “yi” character in the upper left is in the informal writing style on all but the Kiangsi and Kwangsi surcharges, which are in the Formal writing style. The surcharge reads, “change to 1 cent”. Kwangsi SurchargeThe Kwangsi surcharge is in No. 4 Sung type in sheets of 50 (5x10) and was issued in 1943. The first setting was 8½ mm spacing between the vertical rows of characters and was issued in July. The second setting was 7½ mm spacing and was issued in September. The typeset and color are similar to Kiangsi, but the spacing between characters is wider. The “yi” is in the Formal Writing style. The “fun” is without a short horizontal line on the top. There were two settings on the Hong Kong Martyrs and only the 2nd setting was used on the Peking High and Low stamps. They are relatively scarce as only 700,000 of ALL types were surcharged.
