Description: Ceramic Arts Studio (Madison WI 1940-55) is well-known for its beautifully designed and decorated salt and pepper sets of people and animals. This Chinese Boy and Girl shaker set was designed by Betty Harrington and produced in 1947 in their "Foreign Costume Series". The detailed design of the mold and hand-decoration typical of CAS pieces is evident. An example of these shapes can be seen on page 71 of the 2003 reference book - Ceramic Arts Studio The Legacy of Betty Harrington - by Donald-Brian Johnson, Timothy J. Holthaus, and James E. Petzold. He is about 4-3/8 inches tall, 1-5/8 inches wide, and 1-1/2 inches front-to-back. As the salt, he has 3 holes in the top of his hat. She is slightly smaller - about 4-1/4 inches tall, 1-1/4 inches wide, and 1-1/4 inches front-to-back. As the pepper, she has 2 holes in the top of her hair. Both are marked on the bottom "CERAMIC ARTS STUDIO MADISON WI (C) BH" for Betty Harrington. Both are in very good vintage condition - no chips, hairlines, or crazing; - and ready to use or display.
