Description: Method of paymentCarmencita, Bizet Opera "Carmen", John Singer Sargent Carmencita From "Carmen" Depicts Carmencita from the well-known opera "Carmen" composed by French composer Georges Bizet in 1873. Set in Seville around the year 1830, the opera deals with the love and jealousy of Don José, who is lured away from his duty as a soldier and his beloved Micaëla by the gypsy factory-girl Carmen, whom he allows to escape from custody. The vehicle for Bizet's realization of his ideals turned out to be a 1845 novella by Prosper Mérimée, narrated by a French archeologist in Andalusia to whom Don José Navarro, a notorious brigand awaiting his execution, relates the tale of his fatal encounter with the gypsy Carmencita. This print is based on art by John Singer Sargent. Sargent (1856-1925) may have first encountered the Spanish dancer known as La Carmencita (1868–1910) at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris. Carmencita was apparently an very interesting and colorful character, a highly spirited Spanish Gypsy Dancer who performed all over Europe.
