Description: Method of payment 1873 French Engraving -- Trial of Marshal Bazaine - Evidence of the Calvary Massacres - Battles of Gravelotte & Rezonville - Franco Prussian War Marshal Bazaine's Trial Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Gravelotte and its surroundings are home to fierce fighting during the Franco-Prussian War in August 1870, so that the two battles of Rezonville August 16 and Saint-Privat August 18 are sometimes subsumed under the name "Battle Gravelotte. " It is unclear whether this is the density of shot guns and cannons or the number of soldiers killed on the battlefield that gave birth to the phrase "as it falls in Gravelotte" or " rain as Gravelotte "when it rains or hail tremendously. The battle between the 7th and 8th Prussian corps, led by General von Steinmetz , the II Corps of General Frossard and 3rd French corps of General Leboeuf, under the command of Marshal François Achille Bazaine . The Prussians then occupied the village of Gravelotte and the west side of the ravine Mance, while the French occupied the east side of the ravine on the heights of Rozérieulles . During the Prussian movements of 17 August, the French genius has strengthened its position and surrounding farms Point du Jour, Saint-Hubert and Moscow. The Prussians have met stiff French resistance, without ever managing to destabilize the opposing organization. The price of terrible losses, they managed to take the farm of Saint-Hubert . The night ended the carnage. Nearly 5,300 dead and 14,500 wounded Prussian side and 1,200 dead, 4,420 missing and 6,700 injured on the French side. Despite the indecision of fighting and its superiority on the French army, they then chose to abandon the field to take refuge in Metz . This battle marked a turning point in the war, with the destruction of one of the two French armies, the Rhine, and the beginning of the siege of Metz , who capitulate October 27, 1870. This is also the last western battle, where the cavalry, led notably by General Michel Baud, had an important role to play. François Achille Bazaine (13 February 1811 – 23 September 1888) was a French General and from 1864, a Marshal of France, who surrendered the last organized French army to the Prussians during the Franco-Prussian war. He was the first Marshal who had started as a legionnaire and like the great Marshals of the First Empire, had risen from the ranks. During four decades of distinguished service (including 35 years on campaign) under Louis-Philippe and then Napoleon III, he held every rank in the Army from Fusilier to Marshal of France. He became renowned for his determination to lead from the front, for his impassive bearing under fire and for personal bravery verging on the foolhardy (resulting in him being wounded on numerous occasions and having his horse shot from under him twice). He was sentenced to death by the government of the Third Republic, for his surrender of the fortress city of Metz and his army of 180,000 men to the Prussians on 27 October 1870, during the Franco-Prussian War. This sentence was commuted to 20 years imprisonment in exile, from which he subsequently escaped. He eventually settled in Spain where aged 77, he died alone and impoverished in 1888. To the Foreign Legion he remains a hero and to this day is honored as one of their bravest soldiers. Text on Reverse Side....Over-sized print....Slight center fold as mailed over 140 years ago. All text in French. This engraving is 142+ years old. It is the full-page from the French weekly "L'ILLUSTRATION" (December, 1873). This is not a modern reproduction. This picture image is on newspaper stock measuring 14" x 10". The digital images do not capture all of the detail in the engravings. L'Illustration was a weekly French newspaper published in Paris from 1843 to 1944. It was founded by Edouard Charton and the first issue was published on March 4, 1843. In 1891, L'Illustration became the first French newspaper to publish a photograph. Many of these photographs came from syndicated photo-press agencies like Chusseau-Flaviens, but the publication also employed its own photographers such as Léon Gimpel and others. In 1907, L'Illustration was the first to publish a color photograph. It also published Gaston Leroux' novel Le mystère de la chambre jaune as a serial a year before its 1908 release. During the Second World War, L'Illustration was directed by Jacques de Lesdain, a German collaborator, and it became a voice for propaganda. As a result, it was shut down in 1944 following the Liberation of Paris. Another version re-opened in 1945 under the name France-Illustration, but went bankrupt in 1957. Weekly issues were mailed to subscribers who would have them bound into semi-yearly volumes.
