Description: A spreadsheet dated 1864 documenting the sale of quicksilver (mercury) at Virginia City for The Quicksilver Mining Co. The spreadsheet is blue and is written on a sheet of lined paper measuring about 16" x 12 3/4", folded in half to make four sides (pages), each measuring about 8 1/2" x 12 3/4". The first and fourth sides contain writing, and the second side has filing information written on it. The spreadsheet is signed by the company's agent, C.J. Brenham -- who also served as the second Mayor of San Francisco. The document is in nice condition. It has been folded, as shown in photos. There are some notes in pen and pencil, which appear to be part of the business accounting process for which the spreadsheet was prepared. Our father purchased this document from a dealer, and we will provide the buyer with the dealer’s descriptive sheet for provenance. Here's what the dealer wrote: Second Mayor of San Francisco Signs Quicksilver Mining Document Twice Charles James Brenham (1817-1876) was a Mississippi steamship owner from Kentucky who became a Gold Rush Forty-Niner. He was defeated by John Geary in the San Francisco Mayoralty election but won the next election, becoming the city's second Mayor in 1851. His two terms were marked by an epidemic of violent crime, he opposed the Vigilance Committee executions. At the end of his second term, Brenham opened a banking house on Montgomery Street, but when the firm failed, became a commissioner of deeds, Treasurer of the Pacific & Atlantic Railroad and, during the Civil War, agent of the prominent Santa Clara mining company, known as The Quicksilver Mining Co. in Virginia City, Nevada. Autograph document signed, 2 pp, 8 1/2 x 12 1/2 Statement of Company accounts. Expenses included Advertising in Enterprise -- the Territorial Enterprise newspaper, where Mark Twain, working as a journalist, had first used his pen name. Twain had fled from Nevada to California five months before this document was written to avoid fighting a duel. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
