Description: Offered is a colored supplement to the New York Recorder Sunday newspaper in the 1890s. The newspaper existed from 1891-96, and during that time inserted a numbered supplements in each issue. There were a wide variety of themes. The color lithographed images are from the Sunday issue, and there were b/w images are from the daily. It is assumed that the purpose of the serial numbering (was a lottery of some type, wherein if your number or image matched one mentioned in the day's paper, you would win a prize. These are considered the first color newspaper supplements ever issued. * This image is of the USS Portsmouth. The second USS Portsmouth was a wooden sloop-of-war in the United States Navy in service during the mid-to-late 19th century. Launched in 1843 she say much duty until 1878 when she became a training ship. She was struck from service in 1915. 6 ½” x 8 ¾”. Good overall condition.
