Description: Very Early, Very Scarce HANDMADE 18th Century Colonial Antique "Knitty Knotty" (For Winding Yarn Into Skeins) DESCRIPTION: Scans show it all .....a PARTICULARLY NICE antique primitive HAND MADE wooden knitty knotty. These were found on many New England farms from about 1760 to 1820 to wind home spun yarn or thread into skeins. That is why it looks as it does, with one end made 90 degrees from the other. Being used hard as a utilitarian item, however, and being fragile, FEW STILL EXIST and these are VERY SCARCE items today. MOST WERE HANDMADE BY THE FARMER AND THEY OFTEN SHOW SIGNS OF THE HAND WORK. THIS ONE CERTAINLY DOES.....You can see (and feel) the roughness where the pieces were hand carved and hand planed. This is a particularly well made one, in particularly nice condition, with nice handmade feel, design, and style. It is made of sturdy pieces of oak, nicely joined together in dove-tail style, as shown, and measures roughly 12 1/2" x 18 1/2". ONE OF THE NICEST AND EARLIEST ONES I HAVE EVER SEEN!! Also has colonial marks put their by the craftsman to locate the pieces. Reinforced by early handmade pins and nails, adding to the colonial primitive appearance. Nice early item from an early Massachusetts farmhouse. Has great age and patina to it, and nice early appearance & eye appeal. Makes a super display piece by a fireplace, or for a variety of early American/colonial decorating needs. Especially appropriate for decorating or actual use as well, with a collection of weaving, spinning wheels, knitting things, or knitted items. Also, can still be used in your modern knitting and spinning and weaving work if desired!! In excellent condition and a particularly nice, early piece. PLEASE SEE ATTACHED PHOTOS!!!
