Description: c 1868 – 1892 J.F. Wileman ‘DELHI’ Child’s Teapot Staffordshire Miniature Reference: Lorraine Punchard, ‘Playtime Pottery & Porcelain From the United Kingdom & the United States,’ p 95, middle photo. This is an antique child’s Teapot with Lid in a red transfer on a creamy white background of the ‘DELHI’ pattern. Although there are no marks, we can identify this miniature Teapot as a product of J.F. Wileman, The Foley Potteries, Foley, Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent, England, c 1870s. James Frederick Wileman became the owner (after his father, Charles retired) of both the china and earthenware works c 1868 until he retired in 1892. The ’DELHI’ pattern has a large Asian looking branch or tree with oversized flower and leaves on the right-hand side, and on the left a smaller shrub with buds and leaves. There is a honeycomb pattern around the edge of the Lid and Finial along with the occasional flower and branch on the Lid and Handle. The Victorians adored this Oriental-style and back to nature motif that was inspired by the Aesthetic period that began in the 1850s and continued until the 20th century; even the name of the pattern would be fascinating to the Victorians as it contributes to the exotic and mystique of faraway lands. The Teapot has a bulbous shape perched on a low pedestal foot, and loop handle. Dimensions: 6” W x 4” D x 4.25” H Please pardon the white glare marks in the photos. Very minimal light tone speckle around the bottom of the spout area, there is a small hairline that terminates with a 1/16” chip to the end of the spout, and a slight, stable separation where the spout joins the body that may have occurred in the making. The Lid has a ¾” area with excessive glaze on the edge. This antique child’s ‘DELHI’ Teapot is in excellent condition other than the minor exceptions noted. Transfer smudges and skips, and minor typical firing imperfections may appear sporadically consistent with production at the time this teapot was produced. Presented as is and as found.
