UNITED STATES OLYMPIC SPECIALNew York: Interview Enterprises, 1984 Tabloid, publisher's stapled color-printed newsprint wraps. Seminal Olympics issue of Andy Warhol's magazine Interview featuring Bruce Weber's photo portfolio "XXIII Olympiad. Los Angeles 1984." Weber spent months on assignment traveling America and shooting Olympic hopefuls, including Andy Minsker, a young boxer from Oregon, who would later star in Weber's film Broken Noses and The Andy Book. Weber's portraits include Mark Caso, a US National gymnast who made the team after a miraculous recovery from a broken neck; Carl Lewis, one of the best track-and-field champions to ever live; Evelyn Ashford, a highly decorated sprinter; and Jack Kelly, retired Olympic sculler, brother of Grace Kelly and a key organizer of that year's games. In addition to portraits of and interviews with the athletes, this issue touches on controversies of the time including discussion about the disparate treatment of white and Black athletes, steroids, and whether Russia and their Eastern Bloc allies would even show up (later that year Russia declared it would "not participate" in the Games). Cover model is swimmer Jerry Spencer; styling by fashion advertising agency and powerhouse couple Keeble-Cavaco.
