Description: I believe this match box cover or match safe / holder / vesta was made by Fred Brosi of the San Francisco Bay area, California, circa 1910 to 1920. Aside from working alone in his own shop, for decades, Brosi was affiliated at times with similar area businesses including Ye Olde Copper Shoppe and Old Mission Copper Kraft (OMKK). The number 21 stamped inside the piece is identical in type set to some bookends I had by Brosi that were signed “Made By Hand” and that also included an arm and hammer image characteristic of his signature. Nice design with tooled punctate marks and a classy brass rooster medallion in the center. It may be no coincidence that I found this hammered copper match box cover in the Petaluma area which was once known as the “Egg Capital of the World” and still has strong connections to chicken (and rooster) production. Petaluma is about an hour’s drive north from San Francisco, out in the country on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge. Take a look around online and in books, you will not find another quite like this historic piece. It’s a rare form and would look good in any arts and crafts metal collection, especially the Bay area. Please ask questions before bidding. All sales are final. Please review the photos carefully, including at close-up magnification. Selling from my diverse personal collection - be sure to check out my other listings. Thanks for your interest.
