Description: Bristol 1874 and 1880 General Election Ephemera A scarce little group comprising: 1874 General Election 1pp single-sided printed handbill dated February 2nd for the two (unsuccessful) Conservative candidates George Chambers and Sholto Hare. It explains how to vote as well as what not to do on the ballot paper. At this time, voting for two candidates was allowed. Approx. 200x250mm. 1874 General Election 1pp single-sided printed handbill dated January 26th for the two Liberal candidates, Samuel Morley and Kirkman Hodgson, both being elected as M.P.’s for Bristol. Following his win, Hodgson resigned his seat in 1878, triggering a by-election, and he died the following year. Hodgson was an old East India Merchant who later became Governor of the Bank of England. Approx. 135x215mm. 1874 General Election 1pp printed facsimile letter produced by Kirkman Hodgson dated January 27th (“Dear Sir, as we may not have the opportunity of personally meeting you previous to the election, we forward our address for your perusal and solicit the favour of your vote…”). Approx. 130x210mm. 1880 General Election 2pp printed broadside titled “Bristol Election. Mr. E.S. Robinson’s Candidature”. The text reports on two meetings held by Robinson (one of three Liberal candidates) in Bedminster and Clifton. Campaigning for the 1880 election was particularly brutal in Bristol and the printing magnate Robinson was heavily lampooned variously as a traitor and a donkey. At one point in the Clifton meeting, one supporter threatened to “sew up” the Chairman. Robinson came last. Approx. 255x380mm. 1880 General Election 1pp printed handbill produced by the Conservative candidate Ivor B. Guest and dated March 22nd. It lists his policies and beliefs including Ireland. Approx. 205x253mm. In addition there is another piece of Robinson’s ephemera from the 1880 election, but it is in three pieces and in such poor condition to be just included to keep everything together. Overall in only fair condition, with wear, staining and some loss present which hopefully the photographs will show.
