Description: Braniff ceased operations on May 12, 1982 and filed for protection under Chapter 11 of the United States bankruptcy laws.Braniff resumed operations on March 1, 1984, after being reorganized with the aid of the Hyatt Corporation. Scheduled services were operated to 19 cities, a system much reduced from that which Braniff maintained before its financial collapse in May 1982.Braniff resumed service to Phoenix from Dallas/Fort Worth on June 1, 1984. No cachet was provided for the inaugural mail. This cover was carried on the inaugural Braniff flight from Dallas, Texas to Phoenix, Arizona (where it was backstamped).Braniff ceased air carrier operations in May 1982 because of high fuel prices, credit card interest rates and extreme competition from the large trunk carriers and the new airline startups created by the Airline Deregulation Act of December 1978.Two later airlines used the Braniff name: the Hyatt Hotels-backed Braniff, Inc. in 1983–1989, and Braniff International Airlines, Inc. in 1991–1992.
