Audubon subjects reproduced from first edition of elephant folio of the Birds of America by John J. Audubon. ***************************** Print dates to 1951 which would be the John J. Audubon centennial year. Size is 8 1/2" x 11". Art is printed on a heavy, ivory textured paper. Print is in good condition, other than darkening along paper edges. This would easily be covered by a mat or frame. There is a small mark in the paper on right hand side 4" from bottom. Should easily cover with mat or frame. Use zoom feature to get close-up look at print. I will place in plastic sleeve and secure print between a piece of white foam board to protect during mailing by USPS First Class in a bubble envelope. I'll mail the same day, or next day after payment is received. Info on this bird: Bohemian Waxwing, or otherwise known as Chatterer. Length 7 1/2" to 8 3/4"; spread 13 1/4" to 14 1/4". Similar to Cedar Waxwing but larger; white markings on wings, chestnut under tail coverts, and gray below where Cedarbird is yellow, distinguish it. The bird is circumpolar in its distribution, its several races breeding in the more northerly parts of Europe, Asia, and North America. It is very erratic in its migratory movements and apparently is influenced much more by the food supply than by the rigors of the climate. The name "Bohemian" as applied to this bird, is said to refer to its wandering or bohemian disposition, rather that to its being a native of Bohemia. Info on very famous artist: John J. Audubon (1785 - 1851) was born in Santo Domingo (now Haiti), the illegitimate son of a French sea captain and his mistress. His biological mother died shortly after his birth and he was sent to France to be raised by his father’s wife. From an early age, he took a lively interest in birds, nature, drawing and music. In 1803, at the age of 18, he was sent to manage his family-owned estate at Mill Grove, near Philadelphia, and to avoid being drafted by Napoleon’s army. It was at Mill Grove where he intensified his love of nature, drawing, and met Lucy Bakewell, his future wife. Audubon’s story is one of triumph over adversity. His accomplishment is destined for the ages. He encapsulates the spirit of the young America, when the wilderness was limitless and beguiling. He was a person of legendary strength and endurance as well as a keen observer of birds and nature. Like his peers, he was an avid hunter but unlike others, he also had a deep affection and concern for conservation. In his later writings, he sounded the alarm about the destruction of birds and their habitats. John James Audubon is one of our nation’s legendary patriots. He sought after and discovered what our great nation was offering in its freedom of expression and adventure.
