The handmade mounting is exceptional--it is truly a statement piece! The big egg-shaped oval onyx cabochon is the focal point and centerpiece of the ring. It's set in double claw prongs at the corners, and part of the scrolled shoulders rises to create extra "prongs" to hold the stone in at the side. The gold work on the shoulders is lovely, and you can see how the mounting has double construction under the stone. A quality ring overall! The face measures 7/8" north to south by 5/8" east to west. The ring rises about 1/2" off the hand. It is hallmarked 14k with maker's mark MK, with the crisp, clear hallmarks showing little wear.
