Swim or Die! ----------- 5 ----------- Chapter 1 Baywatch: A New World Order? A few years ago Baywatch co-creator, Executive Producer, and real-life lifeguard Gregory J. Bonann and a group of writers, including co-creator, Executive Producer, and head writer Michael Berk, were walking the beaches of Venice, California, talking up story ideas, pointing out potential locations, and making copious notes. Suddenly the sun, sand, and surf fantasy of Baywatch became a jarring life-and-death reality. "My brother is drowning!" screamed a young boy as he ran up to the group. Bonann looked out into the ocean and saw a young boy struggling frantically to stay afloat. Berk ran to the nearest lifeguard tower for help as Bonann ran into the ocean and swam more than two hundred yards to the boy only to find that he had already disappeared below the surface. The lifeguard took a breath and dove to the ocean floor. He surfaced moments later, empty-handed. Bonann dove again, and once again came up empty. Taking a monster breath, Bonann dove one last time. Seconds stretched into minutes. Finally, gasping for air, Bonann bobbed to the surface, cradling the unconscious body of the boy in his arms. While treading water amid rolling and crashing swells, Bonann performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and succeeded in bringing the boy back to life. "Incidents like this only serve to reinforce my belief in the richness that Baywatch brings to television," said Bonann not too long after the rescue. "It is our intention to capture that belief." Berk, for the record, notes that this dramatic real-life rescue eventually became the major rescue in the show's Season Two premiere episode, "Nightmare Bay." But Baywatch, throughout six seasons of adventures surrounding a group of Southern California lifeguards, has been about more than the portrayal of dramatic lifesaving. Baywatch has been about the myth and fantasy that have always surrounded those who live, play, and work at the water's edge. Threading their way through each Baywatch episode are beautiful women in skintight, often skimpy bathing suits, and handsome hunks in formfitting trunks. As beautiful sunrises and sunsets reflect off the crashing surf, the characters save lives, fall in love, and thwart international terrorists, all to the background of tuneful musical montages. ----------- 6 ----------- TV TIE-IN BAYWATCH THE OFFICIAL SCRAPBOOK B% aywatch, the sensational drama of the lives and loves of Southern California lifeguards, is the most popular television show in the world.
