The name Cuauhtemoc means "Descending Eagle," as in the moment when an eagle folds its wings and plummets down to strike its prey. He wears the traditional headdress and ear ornaments of the Aztec elite, and is surrounded by an Aztec border as well as the inscriptions of his name and the metal content, weight, and purity.This is an accurate copy of the stone housed in Mexico's National Anthropology Museum in Mexico City, which was discovered in 1790 at the renovation of the City Cathedral. The calendar is thought to have been carved in the early 16th century and is a national treasure that was once exhibited on the exterior of the Cathedral, until in 1885 when it was appropriately protected.
