Over the preceding two decades, to coincide with Australia Day, legendary Australians have been honoured with the release of the Australian Legends commemorative stamp issue. The honourees have been selected for making a significant contribution to the Australian way of life and shaping society for the better. Actor, comedian, writer, producer, and lyricist, the late Barry Humphries was selected to appear on the 2006 Australian Legends stamp issue. Humphries was much loved around the world for his portrayal of various characters, including Edna Everage, later Dame Edna Everage, Sir Les Patterson, and Barry McKenzie. His exaggerated characters took a tilt at the society in which they lived and in his television shows, his alter ego - the outrageous Dame Edna or the equally outrageous Sir Les - often made guests feel uncomfortable with their unpredictable goings-on. But, like straight man, actor Charlton ("Chuck") Heston, they kept coming back for more. Though these stamps were issued 17 years ago when Humphries was alive and very well, they are a fitting tribute to a great Australian, a wonderful entertainer and his life well-lived.
