Athearn Genesis HO Mt4 4-8-2 Steam, So. Pacific, DCC/DC, Tsunami Sound, New/Test

Description: Athearn G97001 HO guage, Southern Pacific 4-8-2 MT4 Steam Locomotive & Tender #4346 w/DCC & Tsunami Sound. This locomotive features a boiler with printed gauges, applied piping, valves, generators, adjustable cab windows, opening doors, operable cab hatches, running boards, delicate hand rails, metal gears, blackened metal wheels and axles, knuckle spring couplers, DC or DCC operational with the Tsunami sound, speaker and DCC processor installed. Includes the same numbered diesel fuel tender that features metal trucks, knuckle coupler and metal wheels. Athearn Genesis recommends 22” minimum turning radius for this model. This SP 4-8-2 tested fine on my 22” radius turns but a wheel can slip off on the 19” turn on the opposite end of my same loop layout. My son bought this nice locomotive as a gift not realizing it would have difficulty on my layout. If I had the room, I would expand my layout to keep this locomotive due to its appearance, sounds and operation, but alas, I am constricted by the available room size. Currently Athearn sells the Mt-4 units for $509 with Tsunami sound, however this particular model number is sold out by the manufacturer and most dealers. HistorySouthern Pacific performed cost studies to evaluate the possibility of building 4-8-2s in the shops at Sacramento instead of by Alco on the east coast. The project was approved to build eighteen class Mt-3 4-8-2s (#4328-4345) in-house. Sacramento began work, with #4328 in September 1925 and the last Mt-3, #4345, entered service in June 1926. Business continued to grow so the SP Board of Directors approved a new program to build another 21 similar locomotives with improvements -- class Mt-4, #4346-4366. This first Mt-4 class locomotive #4346 went into service in September 1926.
