For years, these were standard equipment for any tandem bicycle ridden down long mountain descents. My wife and I have used this particular Arai model on numerous descents in Wyoming, Idaho, and Colorado with great security. The kit I provide has been personally proven. The actuating lever is best mounted to the right of the bar stem with the lever vertical. A simple rotation of 90 degrees to the right actuates the drag brake. Your hand can be immediately removed without losing the lever position as sufficient friction exists in the lever to maintain braking tension. This particular kit uses the Shimano MT-32 friction shift lever for holding cable tension hands free. You cannot go wrong with this setup. This unit is sized for a 10mm axle as found on most tandems. Some models, notably Santana, requires a 14mm hole to fit a stepped bushing. See the photo depicting the typical installation to the axle. This photo shows the stepped bushing found on most Santana tandems. I can bore the existing hole to 14mm or any size you need by request with no additional charge. Please ensure you know what size you need from careful measurements. You will want to partially disassemble your hub/axle per the photo to confirm the fit and size. Note that there will be spacer on the axle equal in thickness to the Arai steel mounting plate. This spacer is removed when installing the brake.
