Description: Pair of Fine gilt Pier Mirrors in the true Rococo manner Most likely French but possibly American: Circa 1850-60 Appraised by Certified Appraiser in 2004 The Pair ( @ $ 5,200.00): $10,400.00) A pair of fine gilt mirrors: Circa 1850-60. The mirrors are mounted as pier mirrors. Each mirror has a tall oval glass set in an oval frame with stylized leafage and flowers at the center of each vertical side. The oval frame is set within a massive rococo gilt frame with beautifully detailed scrolled openwork with foliage and an elaborate cartouche finial from which spring open morning glories. The frame is made with a straight bottom, for setting upon a mantlepiece of pier table. A related overmantel mirror, with horizontal oval glass, is in the Bayou Bend Collection, Houston. That example is thought to have been made in Boston, Mass. Size of each: 46" wide at bottom and measures approximately 42" towards center of mirror 83 1/4" tall Ref.: Nicole Malenine Antiques, Montgomery, Alabama; the Flomaton Auctions, Flomaton, Alabama. The condition is good for its age. There have been some repairs to the gesso over the years, expected of mirrors of such advanced age. SEE PHOTOS- Over the years aging to wood and note some minor seperations. Heavily adorned with acanthus, scrolls on the mirror frame with rocaille motifs, ornately exaggerated decorative curves and floral scallop motif. Lovely decorated elements of classical style and fine artistry. Each is embellished with delicate carved flowers and foliage decor. The tall frames are a handsome shape- Borrowing motifs from the Rococo and Renaissance era, this is fine example of period furniture. The carved decoration is exquisite, mirror with layered heavy cornice, applied turned molding trim. Craftsmanship is luxurious . The carved decoration on mirrors with their layered heavy detail carving and molding trim is lovely. This pair of mirrors is one of the most distinctive furniture pieces in my parent's collection. The pair are true works of Art and would accent any prominent home with their majestic grandeur. The mirrors are for local pickup only. However, if you would like to have the mirrors shipped, we will work with your shippers for quotes. (Freight Companies - Plycon, LGX.
