Description: This antique Levi Garrett & Sons Tobacco Scotch Rappee Snuff Bottle with Cork is a unique addition to any collection. With a height of 4 1/2 inches, 2 1/2 inches wide, and a brown/amber color, this bottle is perfect for display. Made in Memphis, Tennessee by the American Snuff Division, it has a volume of 5.8 ounces and is a great example of an antique bottle. It is a great item for collectors, or anyone interested in antique bottles. You will note that there are 4 raised dots on the bottom. Jars were filled before the labels were put on because of the strength properties of the snuff, so the packers needed the dots to know what went where. Snuff jars with one, two or three dots, was the snuff that you can sniff up your nose. The jars with four, five or six dots was the snuff that was used for dipping or putting inside your lip. One good reason for those dot markings was that many folks were illiterate back then, so dots were used instead of words to indicate snuff strength.
