The base and handle were made of steel before the days when laundry irons were made of cast-iron. This iron was forged by a blacksmith. The base and handle were made from two pieces of steel then bonded together while hot. The handle made of flat stock, was flattened and then rounded over to make a handle. This iron does not have a bell or rattle in the handle as seen in "Slave" irons of the time. No two forged irons are the same because they were formed by various blacksmiths. This iron is perfect for a collector or those who appreciate primitive antique historical items. CONDITION – No cracks or chips, Sits Flat, Scratches, and Rust Marks Typical of Age RESTORED - Cleaned with lye, rust removed with electrolysis, bottom smoothed, wire brushed, oiled or waxed to preserve metal finish and patina.
