MEASURES: 87 1/2 INCHES (HEIGHT) X 83 4/5 INCHES (WIDTH) X 23 1/4 INCHES (LENGTH) This magnificent and well carved bookcase was custom made especially for the Insua family (one of the most important Argentinian families) in Manhattan, New York, by R.J. Horner during the middle of 1880's to the middle of 1890's ยจ. The impressive and ornate imagery give to this piece a sense of classical grandiosity. The distinctive carvings on this cabinet, the style of the man placed it the columns at different ages, the fierce demon masks, the imposing footed base, the scrolled foliage and the top ornamentation of Griffins, flowers and sheel, leaves no doubt, this marvel of a cabinet was produced by none other than the master furniture makers working for R.J. Horner. This fabulous bookcase with four doors - a feature very hard to find in a Horner bookcase - and completely carved side panels, is a true work of art that represents in a fabulous way the passage of time and the transitions between youth and old age. This Horner masterpiece, with Masonic symbols and drawing inspiration from Italian baroque, renaissance and gothic architecture, explores the aesthetics of aging in wood carvings like I have never seen before in a piece of furniture. We can see that the compositions on the right column look younger while the compositions on the left side look older. Horner master artisans show the differences between youth and old age using shapes and textures on the exquisite decoration of the caryatid figural columns. If you compare both columns, you will see that all ornamentation on the left one looks older that the ornamentation on the right one: it is the same man at different ages: younger and older. Even the fierce demon masks show in a subtle way different ages: the demon mask on the right look younger that the demon mask mask on the left. Also Griffins on the top ornamentation show differents ages, in a subtle way too: carved Griffin on the right side seems to be younger than the carved Griffin ot the left side. This amazing piece of furniture has also an aura of mystery, as the decoration of side panels as carved papyri written in an exotic African language: Acholi, an African language. This majestic case was designed for a library to hold books and display important collections. If you compare this bookcase with other ones made by Horner, you will conclude this is the finest and most spectacular bookcase ever made by this company. Even more, if you compare this piece of furniture with other cases, you will see this is the best or at least one of the best and most profusely decorated bookcase ever made. You can see that even side panels are completely ornate, and it is almost impossible to find a bookcase with this feature, and impossible to find in a Horner bookcase. So this custom made piece of furniture, lovingly hand crafted by Horner artisans, has these unique features: 1ST: .As i said, the bookcase itself it is an allegory or the passage or time: a feature i have never seen in other piece of furniture. 2ND: This is probably the only Horner bookcase with what i guess are Masonic symbols: scales and compass in the center or side panels and in the two doors. 3RD: This is probably the only horner bookcase with completely carved panels in both sides. 4TH: This is probably the only Horner bookcase with two completely carved doors. 5TH: This is probably the only Horner bookcase with a monumental eleven fingers footed base. Good Antique Condition; Age related wear and patina from use. *ATTENTION! Please note that we have a 15 business day handling time posted on our listings.
