Antique Orthodox Ethiopian Coptic Cross with etched cross hatchings and a stamped central sun motif on a hand-strung necklace with old coin silver beads. The Coptic Cross itself is older from the early 20th century and made of nicer coin silver. The cross has nice wear to it, with the back having wavy etching decorations showing wear. The bail itself has worn through given the age of the piece and its continual wear through decades (see photo). It is still stable for wear, however. The coin silver beads are slightly newer heishi beads that appear to be from the mid 20th century given their wear. Their edges are still noticeably linear. The bicone beads are early, nice 20th century fine coin silver bicone beads whose edges have been worn down smooth and soft and whose seams are now barely visible. The fetish, magical beads are also early 20th century from around 1920 made of good coin silver content. These too have good, nice wear and do not demonstrate any verdigris (see photos). Good old coin silver Ethiopian trade beads like these are difficult to find nowadays. Likewise, this nice old Ethiopian cross is a rarer find. This necklace can be worn as is or cut for parts in your personal design. The heishi beads make for great spacer beads, and the fetish beads excellent design elements. Old coin silver beads like these were generally made of melted down Maria Theresa thalers which were approximately .83 purity and traded in the area. Strand of coin silver is approximately 21 inches while the cross adds an additional 1.5 inches. Weight of the necklace is 39 grams. There are ten fetish beads, eight old bicone beads, and 12 beads that have been called harem bells by some people, although they are not bells, just shaped as such. Shipping is for first class.
