Description: 1890s DRESS BALL GOWN TAMBOUR LACE, LABEL JOHNSON, CHICAGO A regal 1890 stunning antique dress Ball Gown of ivory net tambour lace and machine lace trims, two piece in construction. The collar, lapels, and hem are trimmed with an off white velvet ribbon trim.Petersham label reads Johnson, Chicago.The bodice is made with cream tambour lace trimmed with lovely machine embroidered lace appliques. The bodice is lined with cream colored sateen and with 11 fabric covered whale bone baleen stays and has a front hook and eye closure. Sleeves has a pleated tambour lace puff cap with appliques attached. Lower sleeves are made of a light weight sheer chiffon.The skirt has a long trained back sweep with a trained heavily pleated hem bottom underskirt with an overlay of tulle. Outer skirt is embellished with large appliqued flowers, machine lace and machine embroidered appliques. Shirt hem has 4 rows of tan velvet ribbon trim band. The skirt closes by hooks and eyes at the back.MATERIAL TYPE Tambour lace with machine appliqués and lace trimmings. Lining in silk satin.ERA: 1890CONDITION The outfit is in very good condition for its age and this is in very good museum quality condition. Overall in sturdy condition. No repairs. The bodice inner lining is fair/good condition with few small rips scattered about. The silk material overlay on lapels is shredding. On one front lapel’s velvet trim is a small area of pink dye run from being stored with another dress. No underarm discoloration. The skirt is in very good condition. Small section in back area of closure needs attachment to waist band. Skirt’s lining has small splits in it satin silk lining. Hem lining has some oxidation spots. Splits in silk hem fabric on bottom sweep of inner lining. Milburn, president of the exposition, as the exposition was planned with a Latin American theme and they wanted someone who knew the South American countries well. Buchanan was Director General of the Pan-American Exposition, held in Buffalo, New York from May 1 through November 2, 1901, and is credited with the construction, operation, and dismantling of the exposition.
