Description: Antique Allegorical/Mythological (Borghese?) Figures of - 'The Arts' and 'The Sciences' possibly Muses Dimensions are ; 10" high , with a pedestal base measurement of 3 11/16" in diameter . These dimensions apply to each figure . Material is painted and gilded hard plaster throughout . Origin - unknown . The figures imaged here seem to be representations of the creative arts ( The Arts) , and the studied sciences ( The Sciences) . The figures are of classically robed togate women . One holds a sheet or 'globe' in her left hand and calipers for measurement in her right hand . The other holds a musical Lyre in her left hand down at her side and a scroll brought up to her breast in her right hand . We believe these be Borghese figures , possibly antique Italian or produced in the USA by Niepolds Inc of Gaithersburg Maryland from the turn of the century until the early 1970's . Borghese figures which these statues closely resemble share the same type of imagery and sensibility of form and representation as those here . Size , subject matter and material all apply although there are no red and gold Borghese stickers on the bottom as is customary . There are no markings on the pieces and any tag or sticker that may have been on the bottom of the bases is long gone . In any case , these are charming pieces and we have not found any comparables currently available .
