Description: Antique 1905 Lighted Marquee Sign RED-AMBER Glass Bulb Cover for Early Tipped BulbsAntique REDDISH-AMBER Glass Light Bulb Cover used primarily in Lighted Marquee Signs for Movie Theaters, Carnivals, Circus Attractions, and more. Betts & Betts Inc. of New York was the first company to patent Colored Bulb Covers on July 11, 1905, for use by the early signage industry for theaters & playhouses. Solar Electric Co. of Chicago was a licensee of Betts & Betts, who also produced Bulb Covers. This bulb cover is marked Betts & Betts w/Patent Date and measures approx. 2-3/16” O.D. by 1-7/8” I.D. by 1-5/8” Tall (2nd generation w/shorter nipple). The condition of the Bulb Covers ranges from Good to VG+, as there may be some small chips around the wire bulb holder from use. Very Cool, Original Early Bulb Covers look great with any Antique Light Bulb Collection!! Fits non-tipped 10-15 Watt Bulbs too. (Note: Light Bulb & Socket NOT included)(FYI for Reference: Since the Clear ‘Tipped’ Light Bulb was the only type of bulb produced commercially from 1890 thru the early 1920’s, the new ‘clip-on’ colored glass bulb covers were made to fit over a tipped bulb. The ‘tip’ on early light bulbs was formed from the vacuum used to remove air during the mfg process. General Electric invented an improved process in 1923, thus replacing the ‘tipped’ bulb with the smooth top. Tinted bulbs and color coated bulbs weren’t commercially produced until the early 1920’s.) Being offered here at a reasonable ‘Buy It Now' price, with discounts for multiples….. shipping can be combined if other colors are desired.
