Description: Offered is a rare and fascinating Jalisco Mayan or Nicoya Chancay effigy pot featuring a Mayan ballplayer figure. This pre-columbian pot is 5" tall, 4.25" maximum width and weighs 14 oz. The vessel's 3.5" diameter bulbous form is supported on three small, tapered feet and the body tapers to a 3" diameter flared rim which was badly damaged, probably during excavation as shown. The figure itself was not "applied/" to the vessel but was formed as a part of it during its creation. In the reasonable condition shown with additional damage to the figure as well although the three feet are miraculously intact. Encrustations as would be expected and it "smells right". Please note that this piece may have been a burial pot for a Mayan ballplayer although no record of its location or surrounding artifacts exists.
