Description: A pretty little black-lacquered drum form snuff box with stencilled and hand-painted decoration on its lid, American, c. 1820-40. The lid has a stencilled design of two colorful songbirds perched on a nest with three eggs in it, enhanced with three hand-painted pink roses and foliage beneath. This kind of image was often employed in this era, and it represents a wish for fecundity, generally for a newlywed couple. Perhaps this was a gift for a groom or his bride (yes, ladies took snuff) on their wedding day. It appears a standard black lacquered snuff was decorated post-manufacture with this in mind. The stencilled bits recall that of the ‘fancy painted’ furniture of the era. The hand painted enhancements are naïve and rustic in feel, and altogether the box has real charm as a folk art object. It appears it may once have also featured a gilt dotted border surrounding the central field of greenish-blue on its lid, of which not much remains. That dark teal paint also surrounds the sides of the circular lid, with some erosion down to the lacquer base in places. This lovely folky box measures 3 1/4” in diameter and 7/8” high. Condition is good/very good, I’d say. It displays beautifully. I’ll supply an appropriate stand for the buyer.
