Description: This is a phenomenal antique print depicts the town of SItka Alaska how it looked over 110 years ago. The view is from the Castle Hill. American flag-raising site, Castle Hill, or, once, Noow Tlein, in Sitka, Alaska is the location of Tlingit and, subsequently, Russian forts built to control the immediate area. It is also the location where the Russian flag was lowered, and the American flag was raised, in 1867, marking the transfer of Alaska to the United States. In 1959, after Alaska was admitted as the 49th U.S. state, it is the location where the first 49-star U.S. flag was officially raised.It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1962. No structures remain. It is now an Alaska state park located at Lincoln and Katlian Streets, in the Baranof Island area of Sitka. The caption reads that the view is frombv Baranov (Baranof) Castle. Ivan Antonovich Kupreyanov, usually spelled in English as Kupreanof) was the head of the Russian-American Company in Russian America from 1835 to 1840. He built the famous residence, library and museum in Sitka called "Baranof's Castle" by early American settlers, who assumed that it had been built by Alexandr Baranov, Kupreianov's predecessor by 18 years. The residence was the site of the ceremony in which control of Russian America was transferred from Russia to the United States in 1867. Although the residence fell down in 1897 (after this photo was taken), the hill where is was located is still called Castle Hill. The print is single-sided (blank back) with wonderful tones and hues. It is a photogravure print from a high quality portfolio book published in the1890s. The page is in excellent condition. The paper is thick and holds the colors and details well. The page is approx. 7.75 x 9.75 inches and the actual image size (without margins) is approx. 5.25 x 6.75 inches. The portfolio was originally bound with a ribbon, so there are three holes in the left side margin, that could easily be trimmed. This is GENUINE antique/vintage item.
