The Bete are a farming people living in the southwest of Ivory Coast, between the Bandama and Sassandra rivers. Only the western territory of the Bete bears witness to a masked tradition inspired by the We models, used by Gla society and transmitted through the neighboring Nyabwa. This origin is supported by the use of the Nyabwa language during masked dances, but also by the intervention of the Nyabwa who teach their role to the wearers of the Bete masks. Masks occur in funeral rites, during the lifting of mourning or in honor of an important personality.
