Description: Original abstract expressionist color field painting. The work measures 18” x 24”. The painting, like most of my work, was made with acrylic paint thinned with water. Abstract color field painting, a prominent movement within the realm of abstract art, has captivated viewers through its harmonious use of color, form, and space. Among the many artists who have contributed to this movement, Mike Luther stands out for his exceptional piece titled "Oceans Hold 96.5 Percent Of The Earth's Water." Through his deliberate arrangement of colors and shapes, Luther transports the observer into a realm where the expansive nature of the Earth's oceans becomes palpable. The title of my painting holds a significant clue to understanding its essence. "Oceans Hold 96.5 Percent Of The Earth's Water" invokes a sense of vastness, evoking contemplations on the Earth's most abundant and awe-inspiring natural resource. By reflecting on this overwhelming majority, the viewer readily enters a mindset of reverence and reverence for the power and beauty of the oceans. Examining the painting itself reveals how I worked to pour various layers of thinned acrylic painter. handling…for color and texture. The canvas is saturated with various shades of blue, symbolizing the immensity and depth of the oceans. Blues ranging from deep indigo to vibrant turquoise flow smoothly across the canvas, inviting the observer to become immersed in the serene waters. I used color gradients to further enhance the impression of vast expanses, with darker blues suggesting unfathomable depths and lighter shades reflecting the ebb and flow of waves. Within this sea of blues, I incorporated a scattering of contrasting colors. Hints of vibrant orange and lush greens punctuate the canvas, representing life and biodiversity within the oceans. These hues provide a visual counterpoint to the vastness of the blues, reminding the viewer of the essential role of the oceans in sustaining life on Earth and their delicate ecological balance. Through precise use of form and composition, I sought to further accentuates the power of the oceanic subject matter. The canvas is devoid of discernible shapes or recognizable objects, reinforcing the abstract nature of the painting. Instead, I employ large, sweeping pours of paint to suggest the movement and fluidity of the currents and waves. These color swatches create a sense of dynamism and energy, mirroring the inherent force that defines the oceans and their perpetual motion. The absence of specific forms allows the observer's mind to roam freely within the bounds of the canvas. Consequently, the painting becomes a vessel for personal interpretation and introspection. As a Viewer, you might find yourself marveling at the sheer magnitude of the oceans, contemplating their mystique, or even reflecting on the vulnerability of our fragile planet. “Oceans Hold 96.5 Percent Of The Earth's Water" serves as a powerful testament to the indomitable presence of the oceans and the essential role they play in our planet's ecosystems. Through manipulation of color, form, and composition, I sought to capture the essence of the vastness, tranquility, and transformative power intrinsic to Earth's waters. As viewers stand before this abstract color field painting, they are invited to contemplate the oceans' grandeur and, in doing so, develop a deeper appreciation for these awe-inspiring natural wonders. The work is unframed. My artistic process involves pouring paint with different viscosity. The process is an exploration of color and texture. The paint and canvas form an important relationship as the painting develops. The centerpiece of my work is a stained canvas that results from a process of successive “color pours” The process requires patience because the beauty arises once the liquid acrylic, cut with water, has dried. The primary inspiration for my art is Helen Frankenthaler, perhaps the greatest American abstract expressionism artist. My work involves color selection and blending. The style is called non-objective due to the fact that the art work doesn’t depict any particular place, person, or thing. The non-objective style of painting was popular in the 1940’s and 1950’s. My art is influenced by nature. I am a gardener and spend a great deal of time outdoors. The simple beauty of nature inspires my work and provides great satisfaction.
