Description: The Cranes Original abstract expressionist color field painting. The work measures 18” x 24”. The painting, like most of my work, was made with acrylic paint thinned with water. This work is based upon the Sandhill Cranes who fly through Nebraska during their annual migration. I witnessed the amazing Sandhill Crane experience about 15 years ago. I was moved and wrote a free verse poem called “The Cranes”. The poem is below. The work is unframed. My artistic process involves pouring paint with different viscosity. The process is an exploration of color and texture. The paint and canvas form an important relationship as the painting develops. The centerpiece of my work is a stained canvas that results from a process of successive “color pours” The process requires patience because the beauty arises once the liquid acrylic, cut with water, has dried. The primary inspiration for my art is Helen Frankenthaler, perhaps the greatest American abstract expressionism artist. My work involves color selection and blending. The style is called non-objective due to the fact that the art work doesn’t depict any particular place, person, or thing. The non-objective style of painting was popular in the 1940’s and 1950’s. My art is influenced by nature. I am a gardener and spend a great deal of time outdoors. The simple beauty of nature inspires my work and provides color ques. The Cranes Like confetti They dominate the Sand Hill skies Their wings undulate With a gentle rhythm They gather in vast numbers Seeming to swarm Forming mottled black masses The cranes Gracefully Like a marching band They form a symphony of ribbons They climb and soar Within the deep blue sky The cranes This intersection on the earth Is teeming with life It is a ritual That occurs each year As it has for centuries Perhaps before man arrived The sky is their river To the bountiful land below The cranes Black cows dot Brilliant Golden fields Competing for spent maize Late Afternoon casts long shadows Small flocks navigate Above native grasses Circling the fields Searching and foraging Among fields for sustenance And to commune With friends, family and strangers The cranes Calling and cawing Purring like kittens and barking like dogs Rejoicing at their feast The cranes Their brown gray coats Show accents of pink Alternately standing and Dancing in the fields Their wings parting With a span of seven feet They are simply everywhere The cranes Dusk draws them to water Safe from predators They gather at the Platte With sandy shores Grazing on rich grains and grass And pebbles for their gizzards The cranes A lucky few humans Who make the trek Witness this glorious celebration Peering through the reeds On the banks of the Platte And on bridges and benches The air is rich With the scent of manure Traces of snow on the ground Springs greens shooting through The still hard soil The cranes They are almost home Northerly bound A true wonder of nature The cranes
