WorldCat record no.: 871211117. — •:• — Forged title-page of the so-called “Martayan Lan” Sidereus Nuncius by Galileo (1610) — •:• —— •:• — Notes: Issued as volume 3 in the Galileo’s O series of studies on the “Martayan Lan” Sidereus Nuncius (Venice, 1610), a previously undocumented proof copy of Galileo’s famous astronomical observations that first appeared on the rare book market in New York in 2005. As originally designed, the series was intended to provide a rigorous scientific and art-historical authentication of the newly discovered book, but in this unplanned third volume of the set, the expertising and analysis presented in the earlier two volumes (Berlin, 2011) are shown to have been entirely misguided, while the newly discovered Martayan Lan copy itself is revealed to be a self-evident forgery. Related resources: The exposure of the forgery has more recently been made the subject of an hour-long PBS documentary, Galileo’s Moon (2019), and the catastrophic deficiencies of the original two-volume study are discussed at length in Nick Wilding’s “Forging the Moon” (Proc. of the Amer. Philosophical Soc. Mar. 2016: p. 37-72). Condition: Incidental surface wear to covers, slightly bumped; but a bright, attractive copy, showing little evidence of actual use. — •:• —
