Description: A nice and rare collection of 2 number of Indian Portuguese copper coins under the rule Luiz minted in 1881.One coin is 1/8 Tanga ( Y # 307 )and the other one 1/4 Tanga ( 15 Reis ) ( Y # 308 ). The currency was 40 Atia =10 Tanga = 1 Rupee 60 Reis + 1 tangaCoins are having Ruler head facing left and on the reverse Crown . These coins were minted in Goa India. After 1869 coins were stuck in Bombay & Calcutta. Vasco deGama ,the Portuguese explore, first visited India in 1498,Portugal seizedcontrol of a number of Islands and small enclaves on the west cost of India andfor the next hundred years enjoyed a monopoly on trade .With the arrival ofpowerful Dutch and English fleets in first half of 17th century,Portuguese power in the area declined until virtually all of India thatremained Portuguese control were the west coast enclaves of Goa, Daman and Diu.They were forcibly annexed by India in 1962.
