He spent his banishment aboard a ship exploring a huge island to the west that had been sighted by a Norse mariner. The island proved to be a bountiful land and Eric returned to Iceland to recruit colonists. To tempt volunteers, Eric mounted a shrewd psychological gambit. Says his saga "He called the country he had discovered Greenland, for he argued that men would be drawn to go there if the island had an attractive name." Eric was successful and the Viking settlements endured for five centuries. Later, one of Eric's sons, Lief by name, was to sail westward in the year 1000 to the coast of North America and establish a temporary settlement on what was to become Newfoundland.Erik Thorvaldsson (c.950 – c.1003), aka Erik the Red, was a Norse explorer, described in medieval and Icelandic saga sources as having founded the first European settlement in Greenland. Erik most likely earned the epithet "the Red" due to the color of his hair and beard. According to Icelandic sagas, Erik was born in the Jæren district of Rogaland, Norway, as the son of Thorvald Asvaldsson; to which Thorvald would later be banished from Norway, and would sail west to Iceland with Erik and his family. During Erik's life in Iceland, he married Þjódhild Jorundsdottir and would have four children, with one of Erik's sons being the well-known Icelandic explorer Leif Erikson. Around the year of 982, Erik was exiled from Iceland for three years, during which time he explored Greenland, eventually culminating in his founding of the first successful European settlement on the island. Erik would later die there around 1003 CE during a winter epidemic.Your shipment will arrive via USPS Priority Mail (1-4 business days) or USPS Ground Advantage (2-5 business days), after the 2-3 day processing time (upon paid purchase)Shipment(s) sent out of Lemon Grove, California, USAWE CAN COMBINE-SHIP - ASK US FIRST!Will be packed very well - READ OUR FEEDBACK!No Returns ***AN INVOICE WILL BE SENT AFTER PURCHASE, WHICH MAY REFLECT A MORE ACCURATE POSTAGE RATE FOR THIS ITEM - DON'T PASS THIS UP YET!
