This famed Convention was firstheld in June, 1921 by C. W. Waddell at beautiful Bullitt Park and wascalled the Wise County Singing Convention. This first Convention was such a success that the following year theofficials invited groups from Kentucky and Tennessee and called itthe Tri-State Singing Convention, the name it bears today. However, today, singing groups are on hand from many states. This Convention was borne of a love for good gospel singing and hasgone beyond the wildest dreams of the people who fathered it. Ac-cording to W.M. Holbrook, business manager, it is the oldest andlargest event of its kind in the United States. It has attracted crowdsin excess of 15, 000.The Rev. Sylvan Wilson, President of the Tri-State Singing Conven-tion since 1941, says this singing has been ’’rained on but never rain-ed out.” Wilson remembers some of the old timers associated withthe Convention as Sam Sproles, Harrison Fleenor, Levi Jones, JohnWilliams and Guy Stone. As far as can be determined, only four persons have attended all 44of the singings at Big Stone. They are Nergie Dalton, Birdie Hall,Grover Jackson and Guy Stone.Thepeople who set the date and location for the Convention did a finejob. They chose the date as the second Sunday in June. This datecomes when most schools are out and affords the people an oppor-tunity to time their vacations so they can attend the singing. Arearesidents who have moved to other states arrange their vacations sothey can ’’come back home” for the big event. Some of the singing is of such good quality and is presented with somuch spirit that often someone will be overcome with emotion and’’shout all over the place.”Concession stands are operated by the local Kiwanis and Lions Club, and free parking and picnic grounds are available for all who attend. This is the first attempt in 44 years to produce a professional re-cording of this historic event. It was recorded live from the stageand contains the highlights of the Convention as they actually tookplace. With the heartfelt feeling it presents, I believe this albumwill be one of the most appealing albums on the market.TILFORD SALYERTRAIL RECORDS1767 Fort Henry DriveKingsport, Tennessee Thank you for your business.
