The late Bob Gibson was a 9x All-Star, NL MVP (1968), 2x World Series Champion (1964, 1967), 2x World Series MVP (1964, 1967), 2x NL Cy Young Award Winner (1968, 1970), 9x Gold Glove Award Winner, NL Wins Leader (1970), MLB ERA Leader (1.12 in 1968), NL Strikeout Leader (1968). and a member of Major League Baseball's All-Century Team. Gibson tallied 251 wins, 3,117 strikeouts, and a 2.91 earned run average (ERA) during his career. Gibson also briefly played with the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team but decided to continue playing only baseball professionally. Known for a fiercely competitive nature and for intimidating opposing batters, he was elected in 1981 to the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. Gibson rarely smiled and was known to throw brushback pitches to establish dominance over the strike-zone and intimidate the batter. Gibson was surly even with his teammates. When his catcher Tim McCarver went to the mound for a conference, Gibson brushed him off, saying "The only thing you know about pitching is that it's hard to hit." My favorite Bob Gibson "competitor" story was when Gibson faced the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1967 and Roberto Clemente hit a line drive off Gibson's right leg which broke Gibson's leg. Unaware his leg had been fractured, Gibson faced three more batters before his right fibula bone snapped above the ankle.
